Who should enrol
This program is an introduction to the fundamentals of providing advice on SMSF and is relevant to:
- planners/advisers
- administrators
- auditors
- trustees
- accountants
- professionals seeking to specialise in SMSF.
What would I achieve upon completion?
Upon successful completion of this program, you should be able to understand:
- a broad overview of SMSF and taxation issues, trust deeds and trustee responsibilities
- the major impact of the Financial Services Reform Act on strategic advice providers
- how to identify and apply appropriate strategies for unique client circumstances.
Prerequisites
To enrol in this program, you will need to have:
- met RG 146 compliance in the superannuation knowledge area; or
- successfully completed an online SMSF self-assessment in the Practice Exams section of Kaplan Professional's website.

Program duration and delivery

This program can be studied via either:
- Self-study – Delivered via distance education, the program is self-contained with all the materials and resources needed to complete the program easily by self-study. The program can be commenced in the self-study mode at any time. The only requirement is for assignments to be submitted no later than four months from enrolment and you have up to six months from enrolment to sit the final open-book exam.
- Intensive workshop – If a more structured learning environment is preferred, the program is also available in a traditional classroom setting. This involves a period of essential pre-study followed by three days of workshops.
Assessment
To complete the program, you must successfully complete the:
- Assignment, and
- Exam
If you are unsuccessful in an assessment (Not yet competent), you will have the opportunity to:

Recognition & Exemptions
Methods available:
Accountants who complete Kaplan’s SMSF program may be able to obtain an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Students who have completed either:

the Self-Managed Superannuation Program, or
-
The Strategist Group SMSF Adviser Course
can gain credit for five competencies towards their Advanced Diploma of Financial Services.
A successful RPL application for three accounting competencies taken from the latest Financial Services Training Package will enable them to qualify for the Advanced Diploma of Financial Services FNS60104. The three Advanced Diploma level competencies which we have selected are those most likely to have been covered by accountants.
Students who believe they have met all of the elements of all or any of the three units of competency, and can provide evidence of having met the performance criteria, should complete the relevant RPL application forms.

Costs vary depending on your choice of self-study or intensive workshop study.
Self-study:
- Standard fee: $695 per subject
- Finsia member: $625 per subject
Intensive workshop:
- Total fee: $1,250 per subject.
($695 per subject + $555 intensive workshop fee) - Finsia member: $1,130 per subject
($625 per subject + $505 intensive workshop fee)
