Who should enrol


The program is designed for industry professionals looking to provide general or personal advice in relation to margin lending and geared investments. People working in the industry in a supporting role such as customer service IT, legal or product development may also benefit from this program.

What will I achieve upon completion?

Upon successful completion of this program you should be able to:

  • Explain the fundamentals of margin lending, including loan to value ratios (LVRs) and margin calls, gearing and the concept of leverage
  • Identify potential investors who can benefit from margin lending and gearing
  • Identify and manage the risks associated with margin lending 
  • Analyse and compare alternative gearing strategies in relation to taxation
  • Describe the regulatory reforms in relation to advising on these products and what they mean for financial advisers and providers

What will I receive upon completion?

A Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon successful completion of this program.

A Statement of Attainment will be awarded when the required ASIC RG 146 competency has been created if you already have compliance under RG 146 in generic knowledge and skills.

Students who successfully complete this program from 20 May 2010 onwards can earn up to 10.5 Financial Planning Association of Australia (FPA) accredited points credit of continuing professional development*:

  • Self-study:  7 CPD points (Professional Dimensions:  Capability & Critical Thinking)
  • Self-study plus additional Focus Session component: 10.5 points (Professional Dimensions: Capability)

* The FPA consider approved training courses at this level undertaken by new advisers (refer RG 146.72/73), as meeting only minimum education standards and therefore should continue to be excluded from FPA consideration for CPD.


Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites for this program. However, to get the most out of this program, Kaplan recommends that you are RG 146 compliant in the following knowledge areas prior to enrolment:

  • Generic Knowledge
  • Securities
  • Managed Investments

 Kaplan offers these RG 146 knowledge areas through the Tier 1 Compliance Solution or the Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning).

Margin Lending and Geared Investments is delivered as a fifteen (15) hour self-study program with an optional half-day face-to-face Focus Session.

Assessment

There is one assessment for this program: an exam.

The exam is one hour, open-book and consists of 20 multiple choice questions.

If you are unsuccessful in the exam (Not yet competent), you will have the opportunity to resit the exam (once) and you will be re-examined on the full content of the exam.
