Career Overview

Dr Wood retired as Executive Dean of the Curtin Business School in May 2007, after nearly 8 years in the position. He has had extensive experience in the public and private sectors: he has worked in four Australian universities, held the most senior position in the public sector and conducted profitably his own business.

Dr Wood was appointed to his position from the private sector where he was the Chairman of the Wood Consulting Group. The Group specialised in strategic planning and advice and Dr Wood undertook several AusAID projects in the Pacific. He previously held leading positions in the Western Australian Public Sector.  He was Public Service Commissioner from June 1990 to August 1993, Secretary for Local Government from 1984 to 1990, and Chairman of the Local Government Grants Commission from 1983 to 1985.

As a lecturer at the Western Australian Institute of Technology and the University of Western Australia, Dr Wood taught public policy and administration and published work on local government finance, inter-governmental relations and elections.

He was a member of the Board of the Graduate School of Management, The University of Western Australia, from 1990 to 1993.

Dr Wood served on the Committee of the Western Australian Division of the Royal Institute of Public Administration Australia from 1974 to 1993. He was elected Senior Vice President in 1977 and served as President from 1983 to 1985. He was elected President again in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Public Administration, a National Fellow of the Institute and a member of its National Council, in the 1980's and 1990's.

Current Responsibilities

Dr Wood is the chairman of the WA Government Salaries and Allowances Tribunal which sets remuneration for Members of Parliament, the judiciary and senior public servants.
He is a member of the Research Advisory Council for Euro-Med, the Marseille Business School. He is also a member of the International Scientific Committee for Eduniversal, a leading French executive search and university ranking organisation. The Committee advises Eduniversal’s executive on the ranking of the best 1000 business schools in the world.
