The FNS51115 Diploma of General Insurance is for those who want to get ahead in the general insurance industry.

Individuals will learn about the financial services industry, general insurance products, managing disputes, adviser training for Tier 1 general insurance products, industry professional relationships with clients, compliance, resilience, networking, referral business, complex risk assessments for clients, product research, underwriting portfolios, underwriting for complex client risks, piloting a sales strategy for a distribution channel, and complex insurance claims.

After extensive industry consultation, three of the subjects include progressive assessment with coaching feedback and a comprehensive case study, which includes organisational profiles and character profiles. The characters have job roles as clients, general insurer employees, insurance brokers, and external specialists. Individuals are given the opportunity to see a holistic view of general insurance as they apply technical solutions to complex problems, research, use initiative, and evaluate their own work.

Subject information

  • Demonstrate understanding of the role and compliance responsibilities of a Tier 1 adviser in the Australian financial services industry
  • Identify general insurance products and services, and who they are suitable for
  • Propose continuous improvements based on client feedback
  • Provide general advice and personal advice for Tier 1 personal sickness and accident insurance
  • Explain the features, benefits and risks of the Tier 1 general insurance product
  • Develop and secure professional relationships in a professional network
  • Prepare an action plan for developing personal resilience
  • Apply a consultative approach with stakeholders in a risk assessment
  • Apply the risk management process for clients with complex risk exposures
  • Conduct product research, interpret information gathered and justify recommendations
  • Review the performance of an underwriting portfolio and propose remedial action
  • Compare and contrast distribution channels for general insurance products and services
  • Develop, pilot and evaluate a sales strategy for a distribution channel
  • Analyse, evaluate and determine settlement options for complex or non-routine claims

The 12 units of competency are awarded for the successful completion of the qualification; 2 core and 10 electives. For information on the units of competency see the Subject Outlines in the Course Overview tab.

If you wish to apply for CPD points so your Kaplan Professional insurance course counts towards your membership with the relevant industry body, you will need to supply the industry body with a copy of your transcript listing the units of competency.

Duration

Individuals have a total of:

  • 60 weeks to complete the learning and assessment requirements for FNS51115 Diploma of General Insurance, from their initial activation date.
  • An additional four (4) weeks resubmission time per subject– If an individual reaches the end of their initial enrolment period and has been deemed not yet competent in one or more assessment items, then an additional 4 weeks will be granted, provided the individual attempted all assessment tasks during the initial enrolment period. There is no fee for this extension.

Therefore, if an individual completes the learning and assessment, and the resubmission time in every subject is granted, the duration will be 80 weeks.

The amount of training for this course may be up to 15 hours per week. The amount of training is the hours an individual can expect to spend to complete their course work and assessments.

In addition to the amount of training, individuals who are new to industry or vocational training could need up to 5 hours per week known as unsupervised hours. These additional hours are for study skills or further research. For example, an individual not working in industry would need more time to review industry websites that are usually introduced in workplace compliance training.

Individuals working in industry may be able to complete the course requirements in a shorter timeframe or less hours per week.

If a student applies for extensions beyond the 80 week completion timeframe or is granted special consideration,  the maximum period of time to complete this qualification is two years from the qualification activation date.  If enrolling in single subjects with the intention of completing a qualification, the two year timeframe is calculated from the initial activation date of the first subject.

The assessments for each subject are listed below. Units of competency are co-assessed by topic within subjects, as listed in ‘Units of competency’.

Individuals may attempt the exam and/or submit their assignment at any time if they believe they are adequately prepared. Individuals will receive personal reminder emails as they approach their assessment deadlines.

Individuals must be deemed competent in all assessment items, including demonstrating competency in all of the exam questions, in order to be awarded their qualification or course.

The topics and the assessment in subjects DGI3, DGI4 and DGI5 encompass a comprehensive case study with characters in client, insurer, broker, and external specialist roles. The organisations and their risk exposures will develop and change throughout the course.

Subjects DGI3, DGI4 and DGI5 have progressive assessment which includes the following:

  • Optional feedback at weeks 3, 6 and 9 – individuals may submit part of their assignment and receive feedback in KapLearn before the final submission
  • Optional coaching phone call at weeks 3, 6 and 9 – individuals may request a phone call from a coach with their optional submission
  • Final assignment – submitted at week 12 for grading
  • Oral assessment – role play over the phone, at week 12 with assessor for 15 to 30 minutes

Individuals who complete the qualification will receive a qualification certificate.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements.

However, it is recommended that individuals complete Tier 2 General Insurance General Advice for underpinning knowledge. It is also recommended that individuals are working in the insurance industry.

Individuals are required to be aged 18 years or older to enrol in this course.

Individuals who are in Australia on a student visa are unable to enrol in this course. If you’re in Australia on a visa and wish to enrol, you need to ensure you’re enrolling in accordance with the study conditions of your visa.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) requirements

This course requires you to read comprehensive learner workbooks, complete a range of written assessments, undertake independent research activities and at times engage in online forums and discussions. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written communication.

This course is delivered online.

Kaplan Professional’s online learning portal, KapLearn, enables the provision of innovative, interactive learning resources and support. KapLearn can be accessed anywhere at any time using a computer or mobile device with internet access.

KapLearn is the access point for subject notes, supplementary learning material, practice activities and assessments. KapLearn is also the access point for ongoing support. The ‘Ask Your Tutor’ forum provides continuous technical support from subject matter experts.

For the subjects Client Relationship and RiskMeasuring Client Needs and Sales and Claims Management, there is a comprehensive case study, which includes characters in client, general insurance, insurance broking and specialist job roles.  Individuals are given the opportunity to see a holistic view of general insurance as they apply technical solutions to complex problems, research, use initiative, and evaluate their own work.

It is recommended individuals complete the courses and subjects in sequential order.

Individuals may be able to obtain Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a Kaplan award subject based on their previous study and/or work experience. To do this, individuals must submit evidence that demonstrates they have already met the requirements of the subject through these other means.

Evidence can take many forms, such as information about approved study, information about work experience, certificates, transcripts or other credentials.

Tier 2 General Insurance Personal Advice is not an entry requirement for the diploma.
The diploma does not accredit you for Tier 2 General Insurance Personal Advice. An adviser job role will require Tier 2 to provide advice on the majority of general insurance products.
