Do you want to be able to provide general or personal advice in Tier 1 in General Insurance (personal sickness and accident insurance)?

This online course meets the education requirements of ASIC Regulatory Guide 146 (RG146) for providing general and personal advice with Tier 1 General Insurance products and services. The course includes generic knowledge, insurance knowledge and specialist insurance knowledge.

Subject information

Upon successful completion of the General Advice subject, individuals should be able to:

  • understand the role and responsibilities of a Tier 1 adviser in the Australian financial services industry
  • explain the features, benefits and risks of personal sickness and accident insurance
  • determine when a client needs general advice or personal advice
  • apply appropriate communication skills to build relationships with clients

Upon successful completion of the Personal Advice option, individuals will be able to demonstrate all of the above learning outcomes for General Advice, and will also be able to:

  • provide Tier 1 general advice and personal advice for personal sickness and accident insurance

General Advice comprises one (1) subject with five (5) topics:

  • Topic 1: The financial services industry
  • Topic 2: General insurance products
  • Topic 3: Work well with clients
  • Topic 4: Managing disputes
  • Topic 5: Tier 1 general advice – adviser skills

Personal Advice comprises one (1) subject with six (6) topics including:

  • Topic 1: The financial services industry
  • Topic 2: General insurance products
  • Topic 3: Work well with clients
  • Topic 4: Managing disputes
  • Topic 5: Tier 1 general advice – adviser skills
  • Topic 6: Tier 1 personal advice – adviser skills

Tier 1 General Insurance General Advice

There is one (1) elective unit of competency awarded for the successful completion of this subject:

  • FNSASICO503 Provide Tier 1 general advice in general insurance

Tier 1 General Insurance Personal Advice

There are two (2) elective units of competency awarded for the successful completion of this subject:

  • FNSASICO503 Provide Tier 1 general advice in general insurance
  • FNSASICN503 Provide Tier 1 personal advice in general insurance

If you wish to apply for CPD points so your Kaplan Professional course counts towards your membership with the relevant industry body, you will need to supply the industry body with a copy of your transcript listing the units of competency.

Duration

 

 

Individuals have a total of:

  • 12 weeks to complete the learning and assessment requirements for Tier 1 General Insurance General Advice from their initial activation date.
  • An additional four (4) weeks resubmission time – if an individual reaches the end of their initial enrolment period and has been deemed not yet demonstrated in one or more assessment items, then an additional 4 weeks will be granted, provided the individual attempted all assessment tasks during the initial enrolment period. This time can be used to resubmit a written and oral assignment or re-sit an exam. There is no fee for this extension.

Therefore, if an individual completes the learning and assessment, and the resubmission time is granted, the duration will be 16 weeks.

The amount of training for this subject may be up to 15 hours per week. The amount of training is the hours an individual can expect to spend to complete their course work and assessments.

In addition to the amount of training, individuals who are new to industry or vocational training could need up to 5 hours per week known as unsupervised hours. These additional hours are for study skills or further research. For example, an individual not working in industry would need more time to review industry websites that are usually introduced in workplace compliance training.

Individuals working in industry may be able to complete the subject requirements in a shorter timeframe or less hours per week.

Individuals must be deemed competent in all assessment items, including demonstrating competency in all of the exam questions, in order to be awarded their qualification or subject.

Individuals who complete this subject will receive a statement of attainment.

The subject includes both general advice and personal advice. Units of competency are co-assessed by topic within this subject as follows. The units of competency are co-assessed as listed earlier in ‘Units of competency’ in the Subject Information tab.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for Tier 1 General Insurance.

However it is recommended that individuals complete Tier 2 General Insurance Personal Advice for underpinning knowledge. It is also recommended that individuals are working in the insurance industry.

Individuals are required to be aged 18 years or older to enrol in these subjects.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) requirements

This course requires you to read comprehensive learner workbooks, complete a range of written assessments, undertake independent research activities and at times engage in online forums and discussions. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written communication.

KapLearn is the access point for subject notes, supplementary learning material, practice activities and assessments. KapLearn is also the access point for ongoing support. The ‘Ask your tutor’ forum provides continuous technical support from subject matter experts.

Individuals may be able to obtain Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a Kaplan award subject based on their previous study and/or work experience. To do this, individuals must submit evidence that demonstrates they have already met the requirements of the subject through these other means.

Evidence can take many forms, such as information about approved study, information about work experience, certificates, transcripts or other credentials.

Individuals may progress to the FNS41420 Certificate IV in General Insurance and/or to a diploma qualification.
