Designed for individuals who are ready to take their first step into a leadership and management role, this program will help build your leadership qualities, confidence and a foundation for career progression.
With the guidance of a personal online coach, you will explore your potential and develop your own unique leadership characteristics to ensure you’re well equipped to lead in today’s fast-paced and dynamic business environment.
This program comprises three subjects:
- Develop Your Leadership and Management Skills
- Support and Manage Team Performance
- Implement Operational Plans and Processes
On completion of the Aspiring Leaders Program, you will be awarded the nationally recognised Certificate IV in Leadership & Management (BSB42015).

Subject information
This comprehensive program will teach you to:
- Describe how to enhance the effectiveness of your communications
- Outline how to motivate others to follow your directions
- Identify how to be an effective networker
- Clarify how to use technology to manage information
- Demonstrate ways to consult, collaborate, make good decisions and obtain feedback
- Explain how to ensure compliance with organisational and external standards
- Demonstrate how to set goals that align to those of the organisation
- Recognise how to create work plans and schedule people’s time
- Apply the process of managing performance, underperformance and provide feedback
- Identify how to monitor, measure and adjust productivity
- Demonstrate the process of assessing, managing and evaluating learning and development
- Explain how to understand performance expectations for your area of the organisation
- Show how to determine, request and acquire resources to achieve those expectations
- Outline how to use those resources effectively and efficiently to maximise performance and productivity, and reduce waste
- Demonstrate the process of assessing and managing risk

- Outline how to support improved performance of your people, teams and area of the organisation
Develop Your Leadership and Management Skills
Your success as a leader and manager is often based on the foundation skills you develop. This subject focuses on ensuring you develop the foundation leadership and management skills you need to succeed in leadership and management roles.
Support and Manage Team Performance
You will learn about managing and maximising the performance of the people and the teams you work with.
Implement Operational Plans and Processes
In this subject, you will learn how to effectively use limited resources available to you to implement plans, achieve goals, manage risks, and prepare a continuous improvement plans for your area of the organisation.
The 12 units of competency are awarded for the successful completion of Certificate IV qualification; 4 core and 8 electives. For information on the units of competency see the course outline in the course overview tab.

Duration
Individuals have a total of:
- 36 weeks to complete the learning and assessment requirements for Certificate IV in Leadership and Management (BSB42015), from their initial activation date.
- An additional four (4) weeks resubmission time per subject– If you reach the end of your initial enrolment period and have been deemed not yet competent in one or more assessment items, then an additional 4 weeks will be granted, provided you attempted all assessment tasks during the initial enrolment period.
Therefore, if an individual completes the learning and assessment, and the resubmission time in every subject is granted, the duration will be 48 weeks.

The amount of training for this course may be up to 15 hours per week. The amount of training is the hours an individual can expect to spend to complete their course work and assessments.
In addition to the amount of training, individuals who are new to industry or vocational training could need up to 5 hours per week known as unsupervised hours. These additional hours are for study skills or further research. For example, an individual not working in industry would need more time to review industry websites that are usually introduced in workplace compliance training. Individuals working in industry may be able to complete the course requirements in a shorter timeframe or less hours per week.

This course requires you to read comprehensive learner workbooks, complete a range of written assessments, undertake independent research activities and at times engage in online forums and discussions. Furthermore, the delivery mode relies on the extensive use of written and oral communication.

Delivery
The course is delivered online. Kaplan Professional’s online learning portal, KapLearn, enables us to provide you with innovative, interactive learning resources and support. You can access KapLearn from anywhere at any time using a computer or mobile device that has internet access. KapLearn is where you access the learning material, activities and assessments, as well as access ongoing support.
The course textbook Management: Theory and practice by Kris Cole (6th edition) is provided on enrolment.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Individuals may be able to obtain Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a Kaplan Professional award subject based on their previous study and/or work experience. To do this, individuals must submit evidence that demonstrates they have already met the requirements of the subject through these other means.
Evidence can take many forms, such as information about approved study, information about work experience, certificates, transcripts or other credentials.

The assessments for each subject are listed below. Units of competency are co-assessed by topic within subjects, as listed in ‘Units of competency’.

Individuals may submit their assignments at any time if they believe they are adequately prepared.
Individuals must be deemed competent in all assessment items in order to be awarded their qualification.
The Certificate IV in Leadership and Management (BSB42015) qualification will be awarded upon successful completion of all units of competency.
Personal online coach
As part of the Aspiring Leaders Program, you will have access to a personal online coach.
The online coach is an experienced professional who will assist and guide your learning. At key milestones (below) throughout each subject, you will have the opportunity to submit your written assignment and receive feedback from your coach:
In addition, you will have access to the Leadership and Management Community where you are able to meet your peers, share ideas and resources, and post any questions you may have to the community. Your coach will also be available through the Community to answer your queries.
