Subject information

Workplace Communication Essentials

This subject is an optional subject for individuals who are new to industry (less than 6 months in the workplace), and focuses on developing the essential skills you will need to communicate effectively in the workplace. It focuses on the different types of communication you will encounter as you move through your career in your organisation or business, and how to use them to achieve the best results.  It will assist in preparing you to undertake your BSB51918 Diploma of Leadership and Management.

Develop your Capabilities

Success in your role and career are based on your personal abilities. This subject focuses on ensuring that you have the personal abilities you need to achieve your full potential in your current and future roles. The subject is about providing leadership across the organisation; managing personal work priorities and professional development; and developing and using emotional intelligence.

As part of this subject you will participate in an emotional intelligence self-assessment covering self-awareness and awareness of others, reasoning, resilience and realising potential. You will then utilise what you learn to give you the best chance possible to lead yourself and others to succeed.

Lead People

This subject focuses on the skills and capabilities required to maximise the performance and productivity of those you work with. This may be staff who report to you, however, it could also be members of a project team you are on, multi-departmental activities, and even customers and suppliers you have partnerships with.

Leading people requires different capabilities than managing yourself. This subject is about managing people performance, leading and managing effective workplace relations, leading and managing team effectiveness, and developing a workplace learning environment.

Facilitate Change

Once you have a culture of excellence in place, you can focus it on extracting the full potential from the resources under your care. The process for doing this is made up of three areas — facilitating continuous improvement, creating an innovative work environment and managing risk. The framework that will be used to complete these tasks is that of managing projects.

This subject is about facilitating continuous improvement, managing an operational plan, building and sustaining an innovative work environment, managing risk, and undertaking project work.

This comprehensive program will teach you how to:

  • Communicate in the workplace using a variety of platforms to effectively deliver their message (optional introductory subject – Workplace communication essentials)
  • Identify methods to manage and build your personal resources and capabilities.
  • Apply ways to maximise your productivity by managing the limited time to achieve your goals and objectives, and those of the area of the organisation they manage.
  • Recognise how emotions impact on your ability to take full advantage of your capabilities.
  • Demonstrate how to lead and manage people and teams, and act as a role model.
  • Adapt the lessons learned in managing your time and resources and apply this to your team and resources.
  • Assist people to work well together and assist teams to achieve their full potential.
  • Create work environments where people want to give their best and are committed to lifetime learning.
  • Create and manage plans, deal with risk and implement changes, while minimising resistance and adapting to actual results.
  • Inspire innovation and ensure that results continuously improve.
  • Use project management methodologies to ensure that the plans and results are well documented, monitored and reported.

The 12 units of competency are awarded for the successful completion of the qualification; 4 core and 8 electives. For information on the units of competency see the course outline in the Course Overview tab.

Often, the only time we get or give feedback is when someone has done something wrong, or scheduled performance reviews. In addition, we often only get feedback from one or two sources. This is not a true indication of how you are doing compared to expectations of performance.

As part of your development in the Emerging Leaders Program, you will undertake an informal 360-degree feedback review. This self-paced assessment will enable you to gain feedback from two key stakeholders to:

  • Confirm how your strengths are viewed, and where improvement may be required
  • Plan how to change how you are viewed to create a more holistic development plan
  • Prepare personal and professional development in improvement areas
