Qualities that make an effective leader

Perhaps some of you have leadership and management aspirations this year … maybe you’re looking to inspire your team to achieve above and beyond organisational goals? This blog discusses leadership in the workplace and is relevant to current and future leaders. In today’s competitive business environment, effective leadership is a critical requirement in order to achieve strategic goals.

Simply being in a leadership position doesn’t make somebody a good leader. While some people are born leaders, there are certain traits that effective leaders possess that provide inspiration, motivation and clear direction to their employees.

 

Honesty

Honesty is the foundation of any personal and professional relationship. People want to work for a leader they can trust; a leader that has morals, values and integrity. Your team are a reflection of yourself and if you make honest and ethical behaviour a key value, your team will follow suit.

Communication

Communication is essential to ensure your team understands your organisational mission, goals and vision. People want to work to something they believe, so it’s essential they understand they are working towards the same goals you are. Communication should be consistent in establishing work expectations, giving constructive feedback and in training new employees. Your team will learn to trust and depend on you and will give their best effort.

The ability to delegate

Trusting employees to do the best possible work is a sign of strength in your leadership and will encourage them to live up to your expectations. The key to delegation is identifying the strengths of your team and capitalise on them. The ability to delegate successfully will lead to higher quality work and higher productivity.

Positivity

Positivity is essential to team productivity, happiness and work environment. When mistakes are made, even if they are serious, it’s important to look at the bright side of things. You are setting the tone for the work day and your attitude directly affects those under your leadership. Keep the office mood in a fine balance between productivity and playfulness. If your team is feeling happy and upbeat chances are they won’t mind putting in a bit of extra effort for the sake of your organisation.

Commitment

Employees value nothing more than a leader who is willing to roll up their sleeves and do the dirty work when required. Whether it’s jumping in to take a call, writing an email or writing that report, proving your commitment to your organisation and your role, you will not only earn the respect of your team, but will also instil that same hardworking nature among your staff.
