Short Courses
Privacy and Data Protection
Understanding the Privacy Act and the principles of data protection is essential for all employees who handle customer or organisational information. This concise yet comprehensive two-hour course examines the Privacy Act 1988, how it has evolved over time, and why its obligations have become increasingly significant in an environment shaped by rapid technological change and sophisticated cybercrime.
The course explains the distinction between personal and sensitive information, outlines key privacy and data protection obligations, and explores how information should be managed securely across its lifecycle. It also examines the implications of data breaches, drawing on recent case studies to illustrate regulatory expectations and real-world consequences. Throughout the course, learners are introduced to best-practice approaches that support compliance, reduce risk and help maintain trust.
There are two (2) modules in this course:
Module 1: Privacy obligations – This module explains the scope and key obligations of the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles and clarifies the differences between personal and sensitive information in terms of how they are collected, used and disclosed.
