Distance Education or Self-study

Is a mode of education in which students do not attend classes or lectures but study off-site in their own environment. It is well suited to students unable to attend classes or lectures because of work/life commitments or because they live in a remote area, or overseas. Other students select distance education because of its flexibility as they are not locked in to attending lectures or classes at a particular time.

Education providers may support their distance education programs with some lectures (either face-to-face, downloadable audio files or webcasts) or intensive workshops or a mix. This is often called 'blended' mode as it comprises a blend of distance with some face-to-face elements.

Distance education can also be called self-study, self-paced learning or external studies.

In a distance education program students usually receive comprehensive study materials designed to assist them work through the content at their own pace. Students usually also receive support through online access to tutors, practitioners or subject matter experts.

Some distance education subjects also have online forums where students can interact with their fellow students.

Distance education does not suit all students' learning preferences.

Higher Education

Post-secondary education offered by a university or other recognised higher education institution leading to the award of a degree or higher level qualification. Higher education encompasses undergraduate (Bachelor degree) or postgraduate (Graduate Certificate, Diploma or Masters) qualifications.

Intensive Workshop

For students whose learning preference is for a more structured or interactive learning environment, attending a workshop in a traditional classroom setting may be more suitable.

A Kaplan Professional workshop may be anything from one to three days' duration. Workshops are interactive, and run regularly throughout the year to fit in with students' study requirements and other commitments.

Workshops which support vocational education subjects require students to complete some pre-study to gain maximum benefit from the workshop and assist them meet the assessment requirements of the subject.

Workshops are facilitated by industry practitioners and provide the opportunity to attend practical, interactive sessions that are designed to provide insight into industry-specific subjects.

Please refer to the Timetables & Dates page for intensive workshop schedules.

Lectures

Lectures are of shorter duration than workshops (usually 1-2 hours) and are not as interactive due to their shorter time frame. They are generally offered for postgraduate subjects.

Lectures are offered face-to-face in some capital cities for Kaplan Professional postgraduate subjects. All lectures are taped and offered as audio files (mp3 and powerpoint with audio) in the online Subject Room for students who are unable to attend lectures. Content covered in the lectures may be assessable.

Kaplan Professional lectures are delivered by industry experts and have been designed to enhance the student's understanding of subject material through valuable insights and practical examples. Please refer to Timetables & Dates to see the schedule for your state.

Flexi-study

Students can choose their start date and assessment dates based on their learning needs and schedules. While there are minimum and maximum completion times for subjects and courses, there is a great deal of flexibility within these time frames to allow students to manage their study commitments comfortably.

Postgraduate Education

Please see higher education entry. Postgraduate education refers to education at graduate certificate, graduate diploma or masters level. Students enrolling in postgraduate courses are required to have an undergraduate degree or equivalent industry experience.

Trimester-based study

A study period of 10 weeks with fixed start dates, end dates and assessment dates which are the same for all students. There are three trimesters per year. See also: Principal Trimester Dates

Vocational Education

Education and training that provides work-related knowledge and skills. Kaplan's vocational education courses are predominantly open-entry, competency-based courses based on national training packages. Qualifications typically cover Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diplomas rather than bachelor degrees and postgraduate qualifications.
