Multiple choice exams
- Multiple choice questions assess a student’s ability to recall information and to interpret and analyse concepts and data.
- Multiple choice tests require students to select the correct answer from at least 4 possible options. There is only one correct answer for each question.
- Questions may be randomly sequenced i.e. not in the same order as they are presented in the learning materials
Short answers and case study questions
- Require careful analysis of the question
- Responses could range from one word to a phrase, sentence or paragraph/s
- Where a longer response is required a word limit is usually indicated
- May be used to assess a student’s ability to:
- discuss and explain the subject content
- develop and present ideas in an organised way
- apply content to a workplace example or scenario
- demonstrate ability to solve problems and make recommendations
- perform calculations to attain the answer
Closed book
No external sources of information may be accessed during the exam. Further details of the materials permitted are provided:

Student login: Upon enrolment all students are issued with a student number and password for access to their relevant online learning portal depending on which course they are studying: My Studies, My Kaplan or KapLearn.
Photo ID: Photo identification such as a drivers' licence, passport or student I.D.
Specified materials for open book exams: Open book exams permit certain materials to be referenced during the exam. To determine the list of permitted materials, check for details in the Subject Room (Postgraduate students) or the Study Guide (Professional Education & Compliance).
Calculators: For some exams, students will require a calculator that has, as a minimum, the ability to raise numbers to a power (a yx or xy button). As some modules and subjects also require processing of numbers to eight decimal places, a financial calculator may be required. Please check the requirements for your subject before purchasing a financial calculator.
Note that calculators or other electronic devices (e.g. Hand-held computers devices, MP3 players and mobile phones) which have the ability to store and display text are not permitted in examinations.
Foreign Language Dictionaries: If a student’s first language is not English, a standard foreign language translation dictionary is permitted in a closed-book exam under the following conditions:
- Special permission must be sought in writing at least one week prior to the exam. The student may be contacted for an interview to assess the request.
- Only a standard foreign language translation dictionary may be used (one that does not include definitions).
- The dictionary must be handed in for checking at the Kaplan Professional office or to the exam supervisor at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled exam.
- The dictionary must be a clean copy without markings or notes. The dictionary will be returned to the student at the commencement of the exam.
Failure to attend an exam
In the event a student is unable to attend an exam, Kaplan Professional must be advised of the circumstances before the due date. If this is not possible, the appropriate notice must be provided in line with the requirements outlined in the relevant Kaplan Assessment Policy.

Where practice exams are available students can access them through the ‘Your exam’ section of the Subject Room. Subject rooms can be accessed by logging into My Studies on the My Kaplan page. |

If a student’s mailing address falls outside the Australian metropolitan postcode ranges but the student wishes to sit the exam(s) at a metropolitan venue, Kaplan must be advised of this in writing. |

Results
Student results and study history can be accessed online through the relevant online learning portal: My Kaplan/My Studies/KapLearn. This is a password protected area requiring a unique personal ID and password for access. For reasons of confidentiality and privacy, assessment results cannot be given over the telephone.
