Reasonable adjustment

Reasonable adjustment

What is reasonable adjustment?

Students with a disability or ongoing health condition that will impact on your ability to study or complete your assessments, may apply for Reasonable Adjustment. Reasonable adjustment is any change Kaplan provides to help students with a disability have the same learning opportunities as other students.

Reasonable adjustment may include (but is not limited to): approving the use of assistive or adaptive technology; extending or modifying timeframes for assessments, alternative methods of assessment or ensuring the language of assessment instruments do not create barriers (e.g. use of plain English).

Adjustments can be made, unless the adjustment would impose an unjustifiable hardship on Kaplan Professional. Adjustments must not compromise the integrity of the overall assessment.

How do I apply for reasonable adjustment?

Complete the Reasonable Adjustment Form, which is available in the ‘Forms’ section of our website here.

To help us understand how to best support you, the completed Reasonable Adjustment form needs to be submitted with relevant supporting evidence from a health professional. The documentation needs to include the following details:

  • What disability or health condition do you have?
  • What is the severity of your disability or health condition?
  • How does your disability or health condition affect you? How might it make studying and completing assessments more difficult?
  • What kind of adjustments does your health professional recommend to support your learning?
  • Is your condition temporary or ongoing?

Send your form and supporting documentation to our Student Resolutions team at studentadviser@kaplan.edu.au

A Student Resolutions Officer will review your application and advise you of the adjustments that can be implemented once a decision has been reached. In the event that certain adjustments are not possible, you will be provided with the reason for our decision.

Further information regarding reasonable adjustment can be found in our Access and Equity Policy located in the ‘Student Policies’ section of our website here.

Special consideration

We understand that sometimes extenuating circumstances may prevent you from completing an assessment task by the due date or to the best of your ability.

If you are experiencing difficulties, we would encourage you to contact our Student Services team on 1300 662 203 (option 1) prior to the assessment due date to discuss your options.
You may be eligible to apply for Special Consideration if you are prevented from completing an assignment or sitting an exam or if you feel your performance has been affected by:

  • Serious illness/injury
  • Personal trauma
  • Bereavement
  • Adverse/unforeseen circumstances
  • High/increased workload at your place of work

What is not covered under special considerations?

  • Attending events such as weddings, holidays, conferences, etc.
  • Applications submitted after the subject/course deadline date has passed (unless you can provide credible evidence that the request for Special Consideration could not be submitted prior to the deadline)

Your application will only be considered if comprehensive, relevant supporting documentation is included. Possible outcomes may include an extension; if an extension is approved it will be applied from your enrolment period end date.

The Special Consideration Application form is available in the ‘Forms’ section of our website here.
