Kaplan Professional’s Introduction to SMSF course is for individuals wanting to gain an overview of the superannuation industry, with focus on self-managed superannuation funds (SMSFs), the fastest growing segment of the superannuation industry. It provides individuals with an understanding of the contribution rules and conditions, and the investment restrictions that apply to SMSFs.

Individuals who successfully complete the Introduction to Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF) course will receive a certificate of completion.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, individuals should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Australian superannuation and retirement system
  • Explain the main contributions types, preservation and main types of conditions of release
  • Demonstrate an understanding of an SMSF, the regulation of superannuation funds, and what a complying superannuation fund is
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of an SMSF
  • Describe the role of a trustee and their responsibilities, including legal obligations, common law duties and reporting requirements
  • Determine the most appropriate trustee structures for a fund
  • Explain the importance of a trust deed and the deemed covenants
  • Identify the importance of a superannuation fund’s investment strategy
  • Explain the investment rules and restrictions that apply to SMSFs, including non-arm’s length investments, acquisitions from related parties, in-house assets, financial assistance to members, borrowing restrictions, and limited-recourse borrowing arrangements

Duration

Students have a total of 12 weeks to complete the learning and assessment requirements for Introduction to Self-Managed Super Funds, from their initial enrolment date.

An additional four (4) weeks’ resubmission time, which will be granted if all assessment tasks have been attempted and the student has been deemed ‘not yet competent’ in one or more tasks. This time can be used to re-sit an exam. There is no fee for this extension.

Therefore, if a student completes the learning and assessment, and the resubmission time is granted, the duration will be 16 weeks.

Assessment for this subject is as follows:

  • One (1) exam

 

Kaplan Professional’s exams

Kaplan’s exams are open-book and multiple-choice exams where emphasis is placed on the application of knowledge.

You must sit your first exam within 12 weeks of your enrolment date.

To achieve an overall grade of ‘competent’ in the exam, you must achieve the nominated pass mark for each module in the exam. If you are deemed ‘not yet competent’ for a module, you are provided with a re-sit and are only required to attempt that module in the re-sit. If a re-sit is required, it much be within 16 weeks of your enrolment date.

You will receive login details to KapLearn on enrolment. When you log on to KapLearn, you’re able to access the subject notes, assessments, and additional learning materials (such as media, case studies and practise activities) and your online tutor.

Assessments are accessed and submitted through KapLearn.

Individuals are required to be aged 18 years or older to enrol in this course.

This course provides an introduction to SMSFs, however, if you want to provide advice in SMSFs, it is recommended you complete Kaplan Professional’s  FPE020 SMSF Regulations and Taxation subject.
