Six ways to revolutionise the way you study

Sometimes it’s important to review the study strategies you use to ensure you’re performing in the most productive manner. To support you in your student journey, we’ve compiled six of the best study techniques to get you started.

Losing focus while trying to read through notes? Struggling to find the attention span for course content and lectures? Sometimes it’s important to review the study strategies you use to ensure you’re performing in the most productive manner. To support you in your student journey, we’ve compiled six of the best study techniques to get you started.

1. Learn with visuals

We all have different optimum methods of learning acquiring information. However, the most difficult part of studying is discovering what method works for you. Rather than continuing down the path of forcing yourself to use traditional methods of learning, why not be more creative in your approach? Visual learning is one of three very common learning styles.

Visual learners respond to different elements like tone, brightness and colour. There are a range of ways you can incorporate this into your study routine. The most common method is using flash cards, but you can also present information through mind maps, colour coding, creating graphics and recording video notes. Many are surprised to learn how much easier it is to retain information when it’s presented in a unique way.

2. Get competitive

Are you one of those individuals that gets a little too competitive during trivia? Students often dread the idea of sitting down and forcing themselves to focus, simply because they’re not engaging with the content in front of them. However, no one says you can’t enjoy yourself while studying. Try turning study into a game. Gather a study group and apply your study notes to a game of trivia. Every time you get an answer wrong, go over the correct answer and notes to ensure you’re learning along the way.

3. Walk for brain power

Having some ‘you time’ is beneficial to both your wellbeing and learning. Treat yourself with a ‘study and reward’ system. Give yourself something to look forward to by rewarding yourself with something small every 20 or 45 minutes (dependent on your study load). The reward can be something as small as a walk, stretch or read of your favourite book. Whatever you decide works for you, ensure your reward doesn’t distract you from continuing with your study routine.

4. Spread your wisdom

Did you know you’re more likely to remember something if you say it out loud? People share study notes all the time but teaching one of your peers the information you’ve learnt can dramatically increase your chances of sustaining that knowledge. The best way to utilise this technique is to find a quiet room, summarise what you’ve learned, and then teach it to a fellow student or colleague. Spreading your newfound wisdom may not only help you learn but support their learning as well!

5. Explore new methods

One of the best ways to create a positive student experience is to explore new methods of digesting information. Although important, traditional note taking can often become a little mundane, so try to think outside the box. Watching a YouTube documentary or TED talk on the topic you’re learning can help you associate facts with a story. Alternatively, creating vivid infographics will assist you in linking images to your study. These techniques are designed to make study more entertaining, and in turn, productive.

6. Make things social

Social media is a huge part of modern-day technology and there’s no reason why it can’t play a part of your study routine – just try to avoid the mindless scrolling! Setting up a WhatsApp/Messenger or Facebook/LinkedIn group with people studying the same course as you can allow you to share ideas and discuss challenges you might be having. For many people this is the most engaging form of collaborative learning.
